social media

So, I want to talk about something that we all use and (probably) have a love-hate relationship with - social media.

Older generations adore it for helping them get back in touch with long-lost friends and also posting indifferent statuses on what they’ve been doing or watching on tv this Monday afternoon.

However, social media can be toxic. From fake news, photoshopped pictures of smaller hips and bigger booties, it’s safe to say there have been a few problems that have arisen since the trend started.

I also want to point out that after an enjoyable people-watching session - I noticed two groups of people: 1) Friends having a catch up and 2) A couple on a date. What these groups both had in common was their mobile devices being glued to their hand or to the side of them.

It seems like people are always “elsewhere” - either talking to somebody else or wanting to be doing whatever their mutual with 5,000 followers on Instagram are doing. There isn’t a real conversation or “catchup” and instead a silence follows as these people mind numblingly scroll through trails and trails of edited pictures and basic memes.

We have the notion continuously shovelled down our throats that posting our most private parts of our lives on the World Wide Web is the norm. In the hope that a stranger comes across your profile and gives you that meaningless like, we allow ourselves to become slaves to approval-seeking.
